what makes it special

Perhaps the most beautiful Christmas story in the world, with a star cast.

One of the best narrators in the country and a top orchestra perform for a good cause. As a charity event, the evening fulfils the deeper meaning of the Christmas season in the finest way:

  • Outstanding entertainment
  • Contemplation
  • Humanity

the story

This, perhaps the most beautiful story of all, comes from James Joyce's collection “Dubliners”. A wonderful miniature panorama of human error. Transience and love, and with them the gap between ideals and an often miserable reality, are portrayed with great atmosphere.

The story was filmed by John Huston.

Synopsis

Gabriel Conroy and his wife Gretta attend the annual ball given by the Misses Morkan, his two elderly aunts Kate and Julia. The hostesses play the piano and sing, then there is dancing and finally dinner. Afterwards Gabriel gives a speech in honour of the Morkan sisters.

After the party Gabriel takes his wife to a hotel and asks her why she seems so listless. She tells him about the gravely ill Furey, who died for her. Gabriel is jealous of the other man, having had no idea of his importance in Gretta's earlier life. Gabriel realises how small his own importance to Gretta is. He sees the difference between the gradual decay at work in his aunts, who will soon die, in the other guests and in himself, pitiful as he finds it, and the heroic, passionate death of Furey.

A deeply painful insight into the insignificance of his own existence, and at the same time an image of the transience of life and of the deep meaning of close friendship and love.

what thomas thinks about the story and the reading

I first experienced this story by James Joyce more than 20 years ago, in John Huston's film. It captivated me at once. Its humour and its thoughtfulness, that Irish heaviness and the attempt to hold a powerful joy of life against it. The clarity of the characters. The plot, which takes such an abrupt and completely surprising turn. I know of no story that puts you in a better mood for the contemplative Christmas season than this one.

I love to give readings with musical accompaniment, weaving the music closely into the text, like a score in a film. It is wonderful not only for the audience but also for me to be on stage with an outstanding musician and to be carried by the emotion of the music. And of course I am a little proud to be able to work artistically with such first-class musicians.

For me, Christmas also means thinking of those who are worse off. That is why we keep a quota of free tickets for people in need.

  • „...der vielleicht schönste Weihnachtsabend des Jahres...“

Langweilig? Geht so?
